Self-Hosted Zapier Alternatives

5 open-source replacements you can run on your own server — compared on what they are actually good at, not just what they claim.

Why people look for a Zapier alternative

Zapier is the default answer for connecting two apps without code, and it is genuinely good at it. The problem is the pricing model: tasks are counted, the free tier is capped in the low hundreds per month, and costs climb with every automation you add. Once your workflows are load-bearing, you are paying monthly for something you could run on a €5 VPS.

5 options, compared

Which one should you pick?

Pick n8n if you want the closest thing to Zapier's breadth with a visual builder you control. Pick Activepieces if you want something simpler and more approachable for non-technical teammates. Windmill is the outlier — it is code-first, so choose it only if your team writes scripts for a living.

Before you migrate

Self-hosting means you are the one who gets paged when something breaks at 11pm. Before committing, be honest about three things:

Migrating your data

Nearly every Zapier competitor listed above ships an import path — CSV, JSON, or a documented export format. The practical move is to migrate one project or one folder first, run both systems side by side for a week, and only then cut over. Export formats are rarely as clean as the marketing suggests, and it is much easier to notice a broken import on a test set than on five years of records.
