Open-Source Airflow, Prefect Alternative

One recommendation rather than a list — a Airflow, Prefect replacement you can run on your own server, and an honest account of what you give up.

Why people look for a Airflow, Prefect alternative

Airflow is a mature, battle-tested orchestrator, and plenty of data teams are right to use it. The overhead is the issue: a full Airflow deployment is a cluster of components before you have written a single DAG, and for anything smaller than an org-scale pipeline it is more infrastructure than the job needs.

The option worth looking at

Why this one

Windmill is the pragmatic middle ground — define workflows as scripts in Python, TypeScript, Go or Bash, get a UI and a scheduler, and skip the scheduler-worker-metadata-database stack entirely. If you want the visual-first approach instead, n8n covers lighter orchestration well.

Before you migrate

Self-hosting means you are the one who gets paged when something breaks at 11pm. Before committing, be honest about three things:

Migrating your data

Nearly every Airflow, Prefect competitor listed above ships an import path — CSV, JSON, or a documented export format. The practical move is to migrate one project or one folder first, run both systems side by side for a week, and only then cut over. Export formats are rarely as clean as the marketing suggests, and it is much easier to notice a broken import on a test set than on five years of records.
