What is Nextcloud?

Nextcloud is a suite of client-server software for creating and using file hosting services. Beyond files and sync it adds calendars, contacts, talk, office document editing and hundreds of apps. It is the broadest self-hosted alternative to Google Workspace and Dropbox.

Best for

Teams or individuals replacing Dropbox and Google Drive

Why choose Nextcloud

Nextcloud is the broadest single answer to leaving big-tech storage. One installation gives you file sync, a calendar, contacts, a document editor, video calls and a photo gallery, with apps for every platform you own. That breadth is the point: instead of self-hosting five services and wiring them together, you run one and stop thinking about the rest. It is also the most conservative choice in this category — it has been around long enough that migration paths, hosting guides and community answers exist for almost every problem you will hit.

Key features

  • File sync and sharing
  • Calendar and contacts (CalDAV/CardDAV)
  • Collaborative document editing
  • Hundreds of apps and integrations

What to watch out for

Nextcloud is heavy, and the web interface is slower than what you are used to from Drive or Dropbox — the PHP stack shows its age on large folders. It also has a reputation for demanding maintenance: upgrades are a real process with occasional database migrations, and skipping several versions at once can break things. Its own documentation recommends a dedicated server or VPS rather than a shared host. If all you actually want is file sync, Nextcloud is more software than you need and you will spend time maintaining features you never open.

How to deploy

  • Docker
  • Snap
  • Manual LAMP

Getting started

Use the official AIO (All-in-One) Docker image if you want the admin panels and automated backups, or the plain Apache image if you prefer to manage the stack yourself. Resist installing every app on day one — each one adds upgrade surface, and the calendar and contacts apps are the ones most people actually use. Set up the background jobs to run via cron rather than AJAX, because the default mode is noticeably slower and warning messages will tell you so. Have a rollback plan before every major-version upgrade; snapshot the VM or the database first.
